The organic food system as a model links agriculture, diet and lifestyle – Presenting the case
(2017)
It has been shown that the beam quality and the efficiency of high-power solid-state lasers could be enhanced by the use of deformable mirrors in order to compensate for optical aberrations. An intracavity compensation requires a deformable mirror which is capable of handling very high laser intensities. The active diameter of the deformable mirror should be a few millimeters in order to match typical fundamental mode laser beam diameters. There is a wide variety of commercially available deformable mirrors, but neither meets all requirements.
The paper deals with the development of a new type of production planning and control in a wood-processing company. The production is already highly automated and data from the production processes are gathered and stored in a database. The project picks up these technical basements in order to automatically provide intelligent decisions and make the factory even smarter.
We show practical attacks against OpenPGP and S/MIMEencryption and digital signatures in the context of email. Instead of tar-geting the underlying cryptographic primitives, our attacks abuse legiti-mate features of the MIME standard and HTML, as supported by emailclients, to deceive the user regarding the actual message content. Wedemonstrate how the attacker can unknowingly abuse the user as a de-cryption oracle by replying to an unsuspicious looking email. Using thistechnique, the plaintext of hundreds of encrypted emails can be leakedat once. Furthermore, we show how users could be tricked into signingarbitrary text by replying to emails containing CSS conditional rules. An evaluation shows that "out of" OpenPGP-capable email clients,as well as "out of" clients supporting S/MIME, are vulnerable to atleast one attack. We provide different countermeasures and discuss theiradvantages and disadvantages.
OpenPGP and S/MIME are the two major standards to en-crypt and digitally sign emails. Digital signatures are sup-posed to guarantee authenticity and integrity of messages. Inthis work we show practical forgery attacks against variousimplementations of OpenPGP and S/MIME email signatureverification in five attack classes: (1) We analyze edge casesin S/MIME’s container format. (2) We exploit in-band sig-naling in the GnuPG API, the most widely used OpenPGPimplementation. (3) We apply MIME wrapping attacks thatabuse the email clients’ handling of partially signed mes-sages. (4) We analyze weaknesses in the binding of signedmessages to the sender identity. (5) We systematically testemail clients for UI redressing attacks. Our attacks allow the spoofing of digital signatures for ar-bitrary messages in 14 out of 20 tested OpenPGP-capableemail clients and 15 out of 22 email clients supportingS/MIME signatures. While the attacks do not target the un-derlying cryptographic primitives of digital signatures, theyraise concerns about the actual security of OpenPGP andS/MIME email applications. Finally, we propose mitigationstrategies to counter these attacks.
The main task of battery management systems is to keep the working area of the battery in a safe state. Estimation of the state of charge and the state of health is therefore essential. The traditional way uses the voltage level of a battery to determine those values. Modern metal air batteries provide a flat voltage characteristic which necessitates new approaches. One promising technique is the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which measures the AC resistance for a set of different frequencies. Previous approaches match the measured impedances with a nonlinear equivalent circuit, which needs a lot of time to solve a nonlinear least-squares problem. This paper combines the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with neural networks to speed up the state estimation using the example of zinc air batteries. Moreover, these networks are trained with different subsets of the spectra as input data in order to determine the required number of frequencies.
Metal air batteries provide a high energy density as the ca-thodic reaction uses the surrounding air. Different metals can be usedbut zinc is very promising due to its disposability and nontoxic behav-ior. State estimation is quite complicated as the voltage characteristicof the battery is rather flat. Especially estimating the state of chargeis important as a secondary electrolysis process during overcharging canlead to an unsafe state. Another technique for state estimation is theelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Therefore, this paper describesthe process of setup and measuring a time series of impedance spectraat known states of charge. Then these spectra are used to derive anequivalent circuit. Finally the development of the circuit’s parameter areanalyzed to extract most important parameters.
Teaching People to program is a crucial requirement for our society to deal with the complexity of 21st-century challenges. In many teaching systems, the student is required to use a particular programming language or development environment. This paper presents an intelligent tutoring system to support blended learning scenarios, where the students can choose their programming language and development environment. For that, the system provides an interface where the students request test data and submit results to unit test their algorithms. The submitted results are analyzed by a machine learning system that detects common errors and provides adaptive feedback to the student. With this system, we are focusing on teaching algorithms rather than specific programming language semantics. The technical evaluation tested with the implementation of Mean and Median algorithm shows that the system can distinguish between error cases with an error rate under 20%. A first survey, with a small group of students, shows that the system helps them detect common errors and arrive at a correct/valid solution. We are in the process of testing the system with a larger group of students for gathering statistically reliable data.
Camera based path planning for low quantity - high variant manufacturing with industrial robots
(2019)
The acquisition costs for industrial robots have been steadily decreasing in past years. Nevertheless, they still face significant drawbacks in the required effort for the preparation of complex robot tasks which causes these systems to be rarely present so far in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) that focus mainly on small volume, high variant manufacturing. In this paper, we propose a camera-based path planning framework that allows the fast preparation and execution of robot tasks in dynamic environments which leads to less planning overhead, fast program generation and reduced cost and hence overcomes the major impediments for the usage of industrial robots for automation in SMEs with focus on low volume and high variant manufacturing. The framework resolves existing problems in different steps. The exact position and orientation of the workpiece are determined from a 3D environment model scanned by an optical sensor. The so retrieved information is used to plan a collision-free path that meets the boundary conditions of the specific robot task. Experiments show the potential and effectiveness of the the framework presented here by evaluating a case study.
Potenzial eines community-basierten Lebensstilprogramms
zur Verbesserung gesundheitsökonomischer
Parameter am Beispiel des LDL-Cholesterinspiegels
und der Einnahme cholesterinsenkender
Medikamente
Methoden: Die kontrollierte Interventionsstudie umfasst
6 Messzeitpunkte über einen Zeitraum von 24 Monaten.
Für die Interventionsgruppe (n = 112) fanden individuelle
Coachings und ein 10-wöchiges intensives Lebensstilprogramm
mit anschließenden monatlichen Alumni-Treffen statt.
Die Kontrollgruppe (n = 87) nahm an keinem Programm teil. In beiden Gruppen wurden, neben anthropometrischen, Vitalund
Laborparametern (u. a.
beobachtet.
Schlussfolgerung: Das community-basierte Lebens -
Globalization, digitalization and increasingly shortened lifecycles of consumer and business goods require companies to be continuously innovative. Under these domains of innovation, disruptive innovation has developed as a popular term amongst scholars and practitioners alike (Christensen, Raynor, & McDonald, 2015). In fact, the concept of disruptive technolo-gies was introduced to explain the failure of incumbent businesses in times of change (Bower & Christensen, 1995). Later, research broadened the concept towards disruptive innovations thereby going beyond technologies alone (Yu & Hang, 2010). Indeed, recent literature stresses the embracing business model that needs to be designed appropriately to make use of the technology and push it forward in the process of disruption. Subse-quently, current research concludes that disruption in its core is a “business model problem, not a technology problem” (Christensen, 2006).
Despite the recognition of the relevance of a firm’s business model for disruption, a clarifi-cation of the business model concept in the disruptive innovation process appears to be necessary in two dimensions. First, there is only limited knowledge regarding the actual design of (potential) disruptive business models. Second, from a dynamic perspective, less is known about how organizations manage the process of disruptive innovation until their business model yields a disruptive effect in the market.
The PhD research project aims at shedding light on the role of the firm’s business model in regard to the concept of disruptive innovation. Insights from this research project will not only add to a deeper understanding of disruptive innovation from a theoretical perspective but also deliver guidance for managers facing an increasingly changing environment.

Immersion und Materialität. Systematische Überlegungen zur Phänosemiose von Medientechnologien
(2018)
Process-Driven Applications (PDA) require less coding, for their business logic is defined by a business process model which can be executed by a process engine. However, inconsistencies between process model and dependent source code artifacts cause runtime errors and reduce development productivity. This paper targets at making the development of PDAs more efficient: It proposes a broader approach to statical analysis which also covers consistency constraints between model and code. When integrated into common analysis tools or a continuous integration pipeline, defects like broken code references or data-flow anomalies can be detected at an early stage without launching the entire application and its process interpretation engine. The approach is demonstrated by a prototype called viadee Process Application Validator (vPAV), which was developed for BPMN-based process models. The prototype has already been used in various BPM projects, attesting high benefit and potential.

Family-Firm Transformational Leadership, Familiness and Performance: A Four-Path Mediation Model
(2019)
An important strength of family firms is the familiness of these firms. We examined how the transformational leadership style could strengthen firms’ performance levels through familiness. In this cross-sectional field study, survey measures were obtained from family CEOs of 72 German family firms, and the members of their non-family-based TMTs (245 TMT members). Support was obtained for a four-path mediation model, in which three distinct familiness-related team forces (TMT cohesion, behavioral integration, and efficacy) serve as mediators between CEO TFL and family-firm performance in a series. It is argued here that positive familiness results from a specific leadership style.

Disruption, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, Industry 4.0 and Rapid Prototyping are just a selection of the buzzwords that come up in connection with the rapid changes in the professional world and society brought about by digitalisation. As frequently occurs when buzzwords are used, their exact meaning is unknown, or remains unquestioned, but the use of them is nevertheless excessive. In this way, the buzzword ‘digital native’ assumes that an entire generation has a command of digital skills simply because they were born into this world and use digital media naturally. Which skills profiles this generation, and therefore a majority of today’s students, actually command, remains vague however, and is rarely explored systematically. The same is true of the specific formulation of necessary skills profiles in the digital world for higher education graduates. In the debate around higher education institutions, the description of the swift digital transition (with or without buzzwords) is not usually followed by a revision of existing curricula. This article describes strategic considerations for a better fit between the skills demanded of students and the challenges of the digital world.
Virtual reality (VR) is starting to realize some of its promise as a tool to improve training effectiveness. However, research on VR for training and development is limited. Existing theories and models relating to organizational training and learning are infrequently used in the VR literature. A greater understanding of why VR works in the training context would help training designers create effective programs that leverage this continuously developing technology. This paper provides a typology of VR technologies specifically relevant to HR and integrates HR training frameworks and theory into findings on VR training from these other literatures. We specifically focus on immersive VR technology and seek to better understand reasons for the effectiveness of VR technologies for both training and assessment. We review findings, integrate related streams of research, and offer guideposts for those contemplating VR implementation in four important areas: training reactions in a VR context, VR-specific learning outcomes, opportunities for assessment using VR, and the effect of VR on training transfer. We conclude the paper by identifying a VR-training agenda for HR researchers.
A COMPREHENSIVE ACTIVE-BASED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR MANAGEMENT EDUCATION: AN EVALUATIVE STUDY
(2017)
There seems to be a strong distinction between what most business schools prepare their students for and what practicing managers actually do in their professional life [1]. Business education, in general, sees management as analytical and scientific, when empirical evidences indicate that the practicing manager repertoire is comprised not only of analysis but mainly of the development of solutions to illdefined problems [2].
Moreover, the globalization of the economy and the shift from a manufacturing to an informationbased society have led to significant changes in the conditions of work; with post-industrial economies
living an era of continuous market change and creative destruction [3], [4]. This scenario increases the array of responsibilities of higher education institutions which, in addition to providing disciplinary knowledge, should develop in students non-disciplinary competences such as decision-making, problem-solving, interpersonal communication, etc. As argued by Zlatkin-Troitschanskaia, et al. [5],
the development of such competences - sometimes referred as transversal or generic - are increasingly relevant in a society facing constant changes, since they are adaptable to various contexts enhancing the relevancy and the employability of students.
Under this perspective, a change in management education is needed. It should be oriented less on the training of business analysts and more on preparing future managers for solving the ill-designed
problems of real business practice. It is suggested that the focus of business education should move from ‘simply’ providing a body of domain-specific knowledge to give students the opportunity to apply
that knowledge under realistic contexts which better resembling management practice and foster the development of generic competences. In that respect, literature suggested that active-based learning
methods are best fitted for the ‘task’ [6]. More specifically, it points out to a series of ‘desirable’ elements that should be present if one wants to accurately replicate a management learning
environment. This author condensed those elements to form a theoretical proposition: that to build powerful management learning environments one needs to offer students the opportunity to
collectively engage in a series of continuous real-world experiences in a process permeated by careful reflection in and on the action.
How do they do it? Understanding business model innovation in the context of disruptive innovation
(2018)
This paper evaluates based on current literature, whether the versioning strategies “branch by feature” and “develop on mainline” can be used for developing new software features in connection with Continuous Delivery. The strategies will be introduced and possible applications for Continuous Delivery will be demonstrated and rated. A solution recommendation is finally given. It becomes evident that develop on mainline is the more recommendable method in form of “features toggles” or in case of bigger changes in form of “branch by abstraction” within the context of Continuous Delivery.
This paper investigates the role of Dynamic Capabilities (DCs) in the process of Resource Recombination (RR) and thereby elaborates the
framework conditions for the recombination of resources in firms from the dynamic capability perspective. Investigating the role of a specific
set of DCs in the process of RR, this research addresses some existing shortcomings in the dynamic capability literature, where there is a
crucial need to better understand the inter-relationship between capabilities, the resource base of the firm, and innovation in the form of RRs.
Addressing this issue, this paper contributes to the resource and competence based research by presenting a conceptual model of the factors
influencing RR in firms. The findings suggest that regarding their role and effects towards RR in firms two different types of DCs can be
distinguished: Potential Building and Value Realizing DCs.
Active optics is an enabling technology for future large space telescopes. Image-based wavefront control uses an image-sharpness metric to evaluate the optical performance. A control algorithm iteratively adapts a corrective element to maximize this metric, without reconstructing the wavefront. We numerically study a sharpness metric in the space of Zernike modes, and reveal that for large aberrations the Zernike modes are not orthogonal with respect to this metric. The findings are experimentally verified by using a unimorph deformable mirror as
corrective element. We discuss the implications for the correction process and the design of control algorithms.
Further space exploration in the far-infrared (FIR) requires larger apertures in order to improve the spatial resolution of captured images. To this purpose, the Thinned Aperture Light Collector (TALC) concept of a deployable annular telescope has been recently developed at CEA, which offers novel perspectives for FIR space missions. The consortium ELICSIR consortium of European institutes and companies has been created to improve the technological readiness level (TRL) of its key systems and components.
Astronomy is driven by the quest for higher sensitivity and improved angular resolution in order to detect fainter or smaller objects. The far-infrared to submillimeter domain is a unique probe of the cold and obscured Universe, harboring for instance the precious signatures of key elements such as water. Space observations are mandatory given the blocking effect of our atmosphere. However the methods we have relied on so far to develop increasingly larger telescopes are now reaching a hard limit, with the JWST illustrating this in more than one way (e.g. it will be launched by one of the most powerful rocket, it requires the largest existing facility on Earth to be qualified). With the Thinned Aperture Light Collector (TALC) project, a concept of a deployable 20 m annular telescope, we propose to break out of this deadlock by developing novel technologies for space telescopes, which are disruptive in three aspects: • An innovative deployable mirror whose topology, based on stacking rather than folding, leads to an optimum ratio of collecting area over volume, and creates a telescope with an eight times larger collecting area and three times higher angular resolution compared to JWST from the same pre-deployed volume; • An ultra-light weight segmented primary mirror, based on electrodeposited Nickel, Composite and Honeycomb stacks, built with a replica process to control costs and mitigate the industrial risks; • An active optics control layer based on piezo-electric layers incorporated into the mirror rear shell allowing control of the shape by internal stress rather than by reaction on a structure. We present in this paper the roadmap we have built to bring these three disruptive technologies to technology readiness level 3. We will achieve this goal through design and realization of representative elements: segments of mirrors for optical quality verification, active optics implemented on representative mirror stacks to characterize the shape correction capabilities, and mechanical models for validation of the deployment concept. Accompanying these developments, a strong system activity will ensure that the ultimate goal of having an integrated system can be met, especially in terms of (a) scalability toward a larger structure, and (b) verification philosophy.
We have developed, manufactured and tested a unimorph deformable mirror for space applications based on piezoelectric actuation. The mirror was designed for the correction of low-order Zernike modes with a stroke of several tens of micrometers over a clear aperture of 50 mm. It was successfully tested in thermal vacuum, underwent lifetime tests, and was exposed to random vibrations, sinusoidal vibrations, and to ionizing radiation. We report on design considerations, manufacturing of the mirror, and present the test results. Furthermore, we discuss critical design parameters, and how our mirror could be adapted to serve recently proposed space telescopes such as HDST and TALC.
Concepts for future large space telescopes require an active optics system to mitigate aberrations caused by thermal deformation and gravitational release. Such a system would allow on-site correction of wave-front errors and ease the requirements for thermal and gravitational stability of the optical train. In the course of the ESA project "Development of Adaptive Deformable Mirrors for Space Instruments" we have developed a unimorph deformable mirror designed to correct for low-order aberrations and dedicated to be used in space environment. We briefly report on design and manufacturing of the deformable mirror and present results from performance verifications and environmental testing.

Adaptive laser resonators with deformable MOEMS mirrors under closed-loop control are discussed and experimental results are presented. The requirements for deformable mirrors and for closed-loop control systems of these mirrors are analyzed. Several deformable mirrors have been characterized and the results are presented. Currently available membrane mirrors deform under laser load and need further development before they can be used for aberration correction of solid state lasers above some tens of Watts. Nevertheless, the results are encouraging and the requirements are within reach of currently available technology. Finally, we demonstrate an Nd.YVO4-laser with a closed-loop adaptive resonator and more than 6 W of output power. The closed-loop system was able to compensate artificially introduced aberrations from a phase plate.
GSI Darmstadt currently builds a high-energy petawatt Nd:glass laser system, called PHELIX (Petawatt High-Energy Laser for Heavy-Ion Experiments). PHELIX will offer the world-wide unique combination of a high current, high-energy heavy-ion beam with an intense laser beam. Aberrations due to the beam transport and due to the amplification process limit the focusability and the intensity at the target. We have investigated the aberrations of the different amplification stages. The pre-amplifier stage consists of three rod-amplifiers which cause mainly defocus, but also a small part of coma and astigmatism. The main amplifier consists of five disk amplifiers with a clear aperture of 315 mm. These large disk-amplifiers cause pump-shot aberrations which occur instantly. After a shot, the disk amplifiers need a cooling time of several hours to relax to their initial state. This limits the repetition rate and causes long-term aberrations. We will present first measurements of the pump-shot and long-term aberrations caused by the pre- and the main amplifier in a single-pass configuration. In this context, we will present the adaptive optics system which is implemented in the PHELIX beam line and discuss its capability to compensate for the pump-shot and long-term aberrations.
We have developed a new type of unimorph deformable mirror, designed to correct for low-order Zernike modes. The mirror has a clear optical aperture of 50 mm combined with large peak-to-valley Zernike amplitudes of up to 35 μm. Newly developed fabrication processes allow the use of prefabricated super-polished and coated glass substrates. The mirror's unique features suggest the use in several stronomical applications like the precompensation of atmospheric aberrations seen by laser beacons and the use in woofer-tweeter systems. Additionally, the design enables an efficient correction of the inevitable wavefront error imposed by the floppy structure of primary mirrors in future large space-based telescopes. We have modeled the mirror by using analytical as well as finite element models. We will present design, key features and manufacturing steps of the deformable mirror.
We present a novel unimorph deformable mirror with a diameter of only 10 mm that will be used in adaptive resonators of high power solid state lasers. The relationship between applied voltage and deformation of a unimorph mirror depends on the piezoelectric material properties, layer thicknesses, boundary conditions, and the electrode pattern. An analytical equation for the deflection of the piezoelectric unimorph structure is derived, based on the electro-elastic and thin plate theory. The validity of the proposed analytical model has been proven by numerical finite-element modelling and experimental results. Our mirror design has been optimized to obtain the highest possible stroke and a high resonance frequency.
Over the past 5 years we have developed a new type of unimorph deformable mirror. The main advantages of this mirror technology are · very low surface scattering due to the use of superpolished glass · excellent coatings, even suitable for high power lasers, can be applied · active diameter of the mirrors can be between 10 mm and 100 mm · large strokes can be achieved even for small mirror diameters · integrated monolithic tip/tilt functionality based on a spiral arm design We have modeled these mirrors by analytical models as well as by the finite element method. This allows us to quickly design new mirrors tailored to specific applications. One example is a mirror for laser applications that has a diameter of 10 mm and can achieve a stroke in defocus mode of 5 μm. The stroke for these mirrors scales as the square of the mirror diameter, meaning that we can achieve, for example, a stroke of 125 μm for a mirror of 50 mm diameter. We will present design criteria and tradeoffs for these mirrors. We characterize our mirrors by the maximum stroke they can deliver for various Zernike modes, under the boundary condition that the Zernike mode has to be created with a certain fidelity, usually defined by the Maréchal criterion.
Novel unimorph deformable mirror with monolithic tip-tilt functionality for solid state lasers
(2011)
We present a new type of unimorph deformable mirror with monolithic tip-tilt functionality. The tip-tilt actuation is based on a spiral arm design. The mirror will be used in high-power laser resonators for real-time intracavity phase control. The additional tip-tilt correction with a stroke up to 6 μm simplifies the resonator alignment significantly. The mirror is optimized for a laser beam footprint of about 10 mm. We have modeled and optimized this mirror by finite element calculations and we will present design criteria and tradeoffs for this mirrors. The mirror is manufactured from a super-polished glass substrate with very low surface scattering and excellent dielectric coating.
Characterization of a miniaturized unimorph deformable mirror for high power cw-solid state lasers
(2012)
We have developed a new type of unimorph deformable mirror for real-time intra-cavity phase control of high power cw-lasers. The approach is innovative in its combination of super-polished and pre-coated highly reflective substrates, the miniaturization of the unimorph principle, and the integration of a monolithic tip/tilt functionality. Despite the small optical aperture of only 9 mm diameter, the mirror is able to produce a stroke of several microns for low order Zernike modes, paired with a residual static root-mean-square aberration of less than 0.04 µm. In this paper, the characteristics of the mirror such as the influence functions, the dynamic behavior, and the power handling capability are reported. The mirror was subjected to a maximum of 490 W of laser-light at a wavelength of 1030 nm. Due to the high reflectivity of over 99.998 percent the mirror is able to withstand intensities up to 1.5 MW/cm2.

(2012)
Einfluss eines HIV-Care-Programms auf den Ernährungsstatus von HIV- infizierten Patienten in Kamerun B. Sc. Marion Czech, G. Nkengkfack, H. Englert, Oerlinghausen Zusammenfassung Weltweit sind über 33,3 Millionen Menschen mit dem HI-Virus infiziert (vgl. WHO, 2009).
In the German design code ATV-M 127-2, three host pipe states are differentiated: State I for leaky sewers without cracks, state II for sewers with longitudinal cracks but a stable soil pipe system, and state III for cracked pipes with larger deformations and considerable risk of collapse in the near future. State II sewers that are close to the traffic surface must be calculated as a state III situation. On the other hand, the US Standard ASTM F 1216 defines two states: structurally safe and fully deteriorated sewers. This paper examines the common aspects and differences between the two codes. A simple non-linear numerical approach is presented to evaluate the actual safety of the host pipe-soil system based on the following parameters: 1. the pipe material (e. g. age, corrosion depth, state of the contact zones), 2. the measured or estimated pipe deformations, 3. the soil group, stiffness, and possible voids occurring next to the springlines of the pipe, 4. the loading to be applied on the deteriorated pipe-soil system. Using stability and ultimate stress criteria, the safety of the system can be defined in a rational way. Missing parameters have to be introduced into the algorithm conservatively. Case studies are presented to demonstrate safe estimations for the host pipe state. The consequences on the required wall thickness of a lining and the application of non-circular linings are shown. The wall thicknesses resulting from a design for the fully deteriorated state as defined by the design codes in both the USA and Germany are compared and discussed.
The German Code ATV-M 127-2 published in 2000 for the design of linings to rehabilitate sewers has proved itself a helpful guideline to find the optimum wall thickness of any liner material, e.g. CIPP or stainless steel sleeves. Many rehabilitation projects in different European countries have been performed successfully using this code. The code differentiates between three host pipe states: State I for untight sewers without cracks, state II for sewers with longitudinal cracks but a stable soil pipe system and state III for cracked pipes with larger deformations and considerable risk to collapse in the near future. State II sewers but installed close to the traffic surface must be calculated as a state III situation too. According to the code stress, deformation and stability tests are necessary. For many practical cases charts with stress factors and imperfection reductions allow to design without a computer. Numerous theoretical and experimental papers are available which mainly deal with circular linings. An evaluation of design codes carried out by experts of different countries shows a fairly good coincidence of the required wall thicknesses, but the assessment of pipeline damages by engineers is sometimes resulting in quite different assumptions necessary for the design input parameters. The paper reports about the progress in liner design since the 1st edition of the code. Additional clauses have to be introduced into the 2nd edition for non circular geometries (e.g. for hood and rectangular profile), imperfections describing practical and theoretical situations and new applications (e.g. railway crossings). International discussion can be useful to find safe and resources saving constructions.
With the assessment of sewers and drains generally recognised criteria such as tightness, stability, hydraulic capability and efficiency are valid. For the assessment of the stability, however, there are often uncertainties. In this connection the ATV-DVWK Advisory Leaflet ATV M 127-2 represents a practical development of the system of rules and standards for the stability of earth-bedded pipelines that is called upon in the case of dimensioning for rehabilitation procedures. Nevertheless, further assumptions about the pipe-soil system are necessary which often are based on individual appraisals and experiences of the designer. To that end, in the years 1999 to the beginning of 2002, extensive experiments and theoretical investigations were carried out at the Universities of Bremen and Muenster as well as at the Bremen hanseWasser GmbH in order to assess more reliably the load-carrying capacity in particular of damaged host pipes in the ground. The research was supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMB+F) under the short title ASSUR. The paper gives a view of the essential contents of the research; further information can be taken from the final report to ASSUR.
