Two-photon polymerization with diode lasers emitting ultrashort pulses with high repetition rate
(2020)
In this Letter, we investigate the resolution of two-photon polymerization (2PP) with an amplified mode-locked external cavity diode laser with adjustable pulse length and a high repetition rate. The experimental results are analyzed with a newly developed 2PP model. Even with low pulse peak intensity, the produced structural dimensions are comparable to those generated by traditional 2PP laser sources. Thus, we show that a compact monolithic picosecond laser diode without amplification and with a repetition rate in the GHz regime can also be applied for 2PP. These results show the high application potential of compact mode-locked diode lasers for low-cost and compact 2PP systems.
This paper describes how two-photon polymerization was used to generate biomimetic nanostructures with angle-insensitive coloration inspired by the blue butterflies of Morpho. Less angle dependence was achieved by engineering the structures with a certain degree of disorder, which delimited them from classical photonic crystals. Variations in the processing parameters enabled the color hue to be controlled. In this context, blue, green, yellow, and brown structures were demonstrated. Reflection spectra of the structures were simulated and studied experimentally in a broad range of incident angles. Additionally, a molding technique was performed as a potential scale-up strategy. The application of such biomimetic structures is discussed.

The use of augmented reality (AR) in outbound logistics is associated with potentially strong stimuli for cost savings and throughput time. Nevertheless, the benefits of AR compared to conventional methods require a holistic analysis for investment decision making. Until now, research has only assessed case-study-related potentials and selected aspects of the technology. This paper answers the following research questions: How can the economic efficiency of AR in the packing process be quantified by utilizing a holistic model of value drivers? How can AR be technically implemented for packing processes in outbound logistics? What economic profit results from the use of AR technology in a case company’s packing process?
The presented model enables the investment decision to be supported based on economic value added (EVA), thereby providing an assessment of value drivers in packing systems. Cost drivers are identified on the basis of the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) process model. The technical and economic validation of the model was carried out by means of an empirical study: Expert interviews were conducted for validating the model elements. Data collection by a prototype at a mechanical-engineering company was used to calculate the value contribution. The mapping of cause-effect relationships within the framework of EVA driver trees has proven itself in both the expert interviews and the prototype validation. The field experiment at the case company demonstrated a positive value contribution of AR, in particular regarding employee productivity, length and variance of throughput time, quality aspects, volume utilization, and quantity of packing material used.
The use of hydraulic fracturing (HF) to extract oil and natural gas has increased, along with intensive discussions on the associated risks to human health. Three technical processes should be differentiated when evaluating human health risks, namely (1) drilling of the borehole, (2) hydraulic stimulation, and (3) gas or oil production. During the drilling phase, emissions such as NOx, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) as precursors for tropospheric ozone formation, and SOx have been shown to be higher compared to the subsequent phases. In relation to hydraulic stimulation, the toxicity of frac fluids is of relevance. More than 1100 compounds have been identified as components. A trend is to use fewer, less hazardous and more biodegradable substances; however, the use of hydrocarbons, such as kerosene and diesel, is still allowed
in the USA. Methane in drinking water is of low toxicological relevance but may indicate inadequate integrity of the gas well.
There is a great concern regarding the contamination of ground- and surface water during the production phase. Water that flows to the surface from oil and gas wells, so-called ‘produced water’, represents a mixture of flow-back, the injected frac fluid returning to the surface, and the reservoir water present in natural oil and gas deposits. Among numerous hazardous compounds, produced water may contain bromide, arsenic, strontium, mercury, barium, radioactive isotopes and organic compounds, particularly benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX). The sewage outflow, even from specialized treatment plants, may still contain critical concentrations of barium, strontium and arsenic. Evidence suggests that the quality of groundwater and surface water may be compromised by disposal of produced water. Particularly critical is the use of produced water for watering of agricultural areas, where persistent compounds may accumulate. Air contamination can occur as a result of several HF-associated activities. In addition to BTEX, 20 HF-associated air contaminants are group 1A or 1B carcinogens according to the IARC. In the U.S., oil and gas production (including conventional production) represents the second largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions. High-quality epidemiological studies are required, especially in light of recent observations of an association between childhood leukemia and multiple myeloma in the neighborhood of oil and gas production sites. In conclusion, (1) strong evidence supports the conclusion that frac fluids can lead to local environmental contamination; (2) while changes in the chemical composition of soil, water and air are likely to occur, the increased levels are still often below threshold values for safety; (3) point source pollution due to poor maintenance of wells and pipelines can be monitored and remedied; (4) risk assessment should be based on both hazard and exposure evaluation; (5) while the concentrations of frac fluid chemicals are low, some are known carcinogens; therefore, thorough, well-designed studies are needed to assess the risk to human health with high certainty; (6) HF can represent a health risk via long-lasting contamination of soil and water, when strict safety measures are not rigorously applied.
Background: Modern healthcare devices can be connected to computer networks and many western healthcareinstitutions run those devices in networks. At the same time, cyber attacks are on the rise and there is evidence thatcybercriminals do not spare critical infrastructure such as major hospitals, even if they endanger patients. Intuitively, the more and closer connected healthcare devices are to public networks, the higher the risk of getting attacked.
Methods: To asses the current connectivity status of healthcare devices, we surveyed the field of German hospitalsand especially University Medical Center UMCs.
Results: The results show a strong correlation between the networking degree and the number of medical devices. The average number of medical devices is 25.150, with a median of networked medical devices of 3.600. Actual keyusers of networked medical devices are the departments Radiology, Intensive Care, Radio-Oncology RO, NuclearMedicine NUC, and Anaesthesiology in the group of UMCs. In the next five years, the usage of networked medicaldevices will increase significantly in the departments of Surgery, Intensive Care, and Radiology. We detected a strongcorrelation between the degree of connectivity and the likelihood of being attacked. The survey answers regarding the cyber security status reveal a lack of security basics in some of the inquiredhospitals. We did discover successful attacks in hospitals with separated or subsidiary departments. A fusion ofcompetencies on an organizational level facilitates the right behavior here. Most hospitals rated themselvespredominantly positively in the self-assessment but also stated the usefulness of IT security insurance. Conclusions:Concluding our results, hospitals are already facing the consequences of omitted measures within theirgrowing pool of medical devices. Continuously relying on historically grown structures without adaption and trustingmanufactures to solve vectors is a critical behavior that could seriously endanger patients.
Mental Stress and Health-Related Quality of Life in Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria Although the level of mental stress in adolescents with gender dysphoria is found to be generally high in many studies, differences have been shown between samples of gender dysphoria clinics for adolescents in different countries. However, a comparison within the German speaking area is lacking. In this article we compared samples of gender dysphoria clinics from Munster (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland) and tested potential correlates of mental stress using quantitative methods. Subsequently, we interviewed clients from both clinics regarding mental stressors and protective factors. There were no quantitative differences in the level of mental stress of clients between Munster and Zurich, whereas health-related quality of life was significantly higher in Munster. Problems in physical well-being and school environment were the strongest correlates of mental stress. This reflects in the interviews, too, in addition to further related factors reported. We conclude that physical well-being and inclusion at school should be addressed with special emphasis in counseling or treatment of adolescents with gender dysphoria to counter the in average high levels of mental stress.

High strength steel has been used in the aviation industry and automotive body structural applications to reduce its mass through a reduction in thickness. Therefore, it is very important to enhance its mechanical property, such as microhardness. In the present research, the high strength steel samples were treated by laser shock peening (LSP) with different laser pulse energy and laser pulse width. The microhardness and residual stress were measured to compare the difference between laser energy of 3 J with 10 ns and 5 J with 20 ns. The results in the study show that the surface LSP treatment can increase the microhardness and the compressive residual stress can be found when the samples were tested by hole drilling testing.
This research paper presents the attempt at ultrashort pulsed laser shock peening with absence of absorptive layer and confining medium which could enhance surface microhardness and the abrasion property of NiTi shape memory alloy. The average roughness values of NiTi specimen were measured on the surface, because the roughness would affect the friction resistance. The microhardness and Young's modulus were investigated at different position of single laser spot by nanoindentation technique. The pin-on-plate sliding abrasion testing were performed with different load-force (0.5 N and 2 N) for different testing time. Results showed that ultrashort pulsed laser shock peening treatment would cause a significant improvement on friction coefficient and abrasion property, which was attributed to the change of surface modification, such as roughness, microhardness, microstructure and titanium oxide layer …
Laser shock peening with femtosecond laser was used to improve the corrosion resistance of biomedical NiTi alloy without protective coating in the air environment. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) based analysis showed that the laser ablation could produce titanium oxide layer and femtosecond laser shock peening (FsLSP) can generate residual stress in the surface layer of NiTi alloy. The FsLSP improved the corrosion resistance of NiTi in 3.5% NaCl solution and Hank’s solution and also prevented the formation of corrosion cracks and pits during corrosion testing. The reasons for the improvement of corrosion behavior may be the generation of residual stress and titanium oxide film during the laser surface treatment.
The experiment study presents the influence of femtosecond laser shock peening (FsLSP) without a protective layer in the air on the surface hardness and surface mechanical property of NiTi shape memory alloy. Femtosecond laser shock peening is a new possibility of direct laser ablation without any protective layer under atmospheric conditions, which can produce intense shock waves with low pulse energy in the air. The average surface roughness values of the NiTi alloy samples were measured, because the surface roughness may affect its friction resistance. The results showed that the surface roughness of NiTi increased after femtosecond laser shock peening treatment. In comparison with the initial state, the coefficient of friction decreased and surface microhardness increased after femtosecond laser shock peening treatment with different FsLSP parameters. This improvement of wear properties may be attributed to the enhancement of surface microhardness and surface titanium oxide layer induced by the shock wave and laser ablation during FsLSP treatment.
Laser shock peening with a femtosecond laser system was presented in this research work. The NiTi shape memory alloy was processed by the femtosecond laser shock peening (FsLSP) treatment without a protective layer in the air. Femtosecond laser shock peening is a new surface technology, which can induce an intense shock wave with low single laser pulse energy under atmospheric conditions. The surface topography, roughness, microhardness, and wear resistance were measured on the surface of NiTi alloy before and after femtosecond laser peening treatment. The results showed that the surface roughness and microhardness could be increased after femtosecond laser shock peening, which may be due to the laser ablation and micro-plastic deformation induced by the shock wave. The wear property of NiTi alloy was improved, which may be attributed to the FsLSPed surface texturing and …

Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is a novel transport protocol introducing known features in a new protocol design. To investigate these features and the design, we developed a QUIC implementation in the INET simulation model suite.
In this paper, we describe that implementation, its validation and a result achieved using the simulation model. The result shows the negative impact on throughput, when raising the acknowledgment ratio. We propose a solution and describe how it solves the issue.

On-the-fly remote laser processing plays an increasingly important role in modern fabrication techniques. These processes require guiding of the focus of a laser beam along the contours of the workpiece in three dimensions.
State-of-the-art galvanometer scanners already provide highly dynamic and precise transverse x−y beam steering. However, longitudinal focus shifting (“z-shifting”) relying on conventional optics is restricted to a bandwidth of a few hundred Hz. We have developed and manufactured a fast piezo-based z-shifting mirror with diffraction-limited surface fidelity providing a focus shift of 1z> 60 mm with an actuation rate of 2 kHz.

Background: Mental health is an emerging topic on university campuses, with students reporting higher levels of psychological distress than the general population of the same age. Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time have been proved promising measures to promote mental health in the general population. However, to derive and implement effective measures to promote mental health among university students, further exploration of the associations between physical activity, sedentary time, and perceived stress in this specific setting is needed.
Objective: This study aims to identify associations between physical activity, sedentary time, and perceived stress after controlling for sociodemographic and behavioral variables among university students in Germany. We hypothesize that perceived stress is inversely related to physical activity and positively associated with sedentary time. Furthermore, we hypothesize that combined associations of concurrently high physical activity and low sedentary time on perceived stress are stronger compared with either alone and that the association between physical activity and perceived stress depends on activity intensity.
Methods: We conducted cross-sectional analyses from a large-scale internet-based student health survey (n=4189; response rate=10.0%). Physical activity, sedentary time, and engaging in moderate and vigorous activity intensities were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form with categorization into low, intermediate, and high levels. We measured perceived stress using the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (range 0-40).
Results: The results indicate that higher physical activity and lower sedentary time are associated with reduced levels of perceived stress. Following adjustment for gender, BMI, income, fruit and vegetable intake, alcohol consumption, and sleep quality, perceived stress scores were lower for students reporting high physical activity levels and low sedentary time compared with the least active and highly sedentary students (Perceived Stress Scale –2.2, 95% CI –2.9 to –1.5, P<.001 for physical activity and –1.1, CI 95% –1.7 to –0.5, P<.001 for sedentary time). Combined associations with perceived stress revealed that students concurrently reporting high total physical activity and low sedentary time reported the lowest perceived stress scores of all possible combinations following adjustment for confounders (Perceived Stress Scale –3.5, CI 95% –4.6 to –2.5, P<.001 compared with students reporting low physical activity levels and concurrently high sedentary time). Associations between vigorous physical activities and perceived stress were not stronger compared with moderate activity intensities.
Conclusions: Self-reported physical activity and low sedentary time are favorably associated with perceived stress, while the intensity of physical activities seems to be of minor importance. These results help to effectively implement health-promoting measures on campus among university students through increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time.
